Colleagues and Collaborators
Pod Post is the Mail Art and merit-badge side of my obsession--an excuse to dress up like a girl guide, swoon over postage stamps, and give great mail. Go there for zines, letterpressed stationery items, and the famous Mail Art Bento Boxes and book arts merit badges.
Red Letter Day is the Mail Art zine masterminded and painstakingly published by my Pod Post partner in crime, Jennie Hinchcliff.
Elevator Ride is what it sounds like to drink a gallon of good red wine, eat the Oxford English Dictionary with a side of raspberries, and stare out the window at the clouds scudding past.
J. Von Spangenberg is the official Pod Post photographer and illustrator, even though we always forget to give him credit. He's nearsighted, so if you're lucky he won't see you stealing his french fries.
All This Is Mine is the more established and immaculately turned-out East-Bay sister of Pod Post. Beautifully made gocco stationery, packs of vintage airmail envelopes and mail etiquettes, and whatever else its proprietess sees fit to include. Heartily endorsed by people who already have too much paper.
Imbroglio means chaos, confusion, intrigue, and intricacy. These words all explain perfectly how my bestest friend from high school (and today) managed to turn himself into a lawyer. Read The Imbroglio and then send the poor guy a six-pack and a copy of your favorite book.
acrofish is the alter-ego of Wayne, Minister of Propaganda--the punk rock junk-picker who also helps out with wily computer code.
Distractions and Diversions
Bittersweetness and Light Two of my favorite things--zines and printing--currently taking place in Iowa City, one of my favorite places.
Boxer Press. All of Kate Godfrey's personalities have impeccable taste, and would love to tell you how to make your life better.
Cat and Girl comics. The cure for a dead, reality-tv world.
The Fart Party. There are not really that many poop jokes, I swear.
I'm The Sky. What happens when an artist drives a grease van across the country? I am not usually one to be envious of sleeping in a van, but...
Make Ready. Now just a roll of neat sites and observances, I wish I'd seen it in its salad days.
Marlys Magazine. Of course you have already heard about the online presence of the inimitable Lynda Barry, who is my personal hero.
Miss Sequential (a.k.a. Marissa Falco, former editrix of the zine Red Hooded Sweatshirt). Eavesdrop and read comics!
Notebookism. Of course it would stand to reason that I would spend my time reading about notebooks and seeing the things people put in them.
On My Desk. Ditto.
Paper Chase is a collection of found papers, lovingly cataloged. Roll over to see what and where found. LOVE!
Pencil Revolution. Not frequently updated, but just the kind of obsessive geekery I can really endorse.
The Small Object Steno Pad. Photos and news from Sarah Neuberger, who runs The Small Object. Observe her singular craft vision. Download the free gift tags and tiny cards. Buy somethin'. I wish I knew where she had her rubber stamps made (I'm too chicken to ask).
The Wertzateria Blog. Monoprints and band posters and Charles Nelson Reilly, oh my! Check out his collaborative zine, Fescue Me, with Anne Maria Hardeman.
Wish Jar Journal and Wreck This Journal. I'm sure the allure is obvious. Enjoy also Keri's Artist's Survival Kit. I have to go lie in bed and eat chips now. 'Bye.
Thanks also to Nancie Cook (self-styled craft reference librarian and mentor), the San Francisco Center for the Book (people, place, and resources), Catherine Helfer (aesthete, artist, and fashion maven), Natty Bumppo and Frances Finkelstein (the cats), and anyone who's ever purchased a journal.
